Motor Racing Programme Covers

November 2017 Additions and Updates

Race of Champions and Late Model Dirt Covers (28/11/2017)

Lake Erie Speedway, 30/09/2017

More from John Lehmann today, with programme covers of the Race of Champions 250 at Lake Erie Speedway and the Pittsburgher 100 at Pennsylvania Motor Speedway — both new track listings.

Modifieds and Supercars Programme Covers (27/11/2017)

Newcastle Street Circuit, 26/11/2017

Thanks to John Lehmann for covers from Oswego Speedway (ISMA SuperNationals) and Wall Stadium (last weekend's Turkey Derby), and thanks to Warrick Ford for the final programme cover of the 2017 Supercars Championship from Newcastle Street Circuit (a new track listing).

Circuit, Hill Climb, Book, and Rally Covers (26/11/2017)

Mickhausen Hill Climb, 01/10/2017

Thanks to Carl Henderson for the 2004 Laguna Seca Raceway Ferrari Challenge programme cover, and to Terry Lynch for the other covers from circuits and hill climbs in the United States, plus the 2003 Rally Australia and 1981 Reno International Rally covers. Thanks also to Wolfgang Neumayer for all the 2017 German programme covers and the 2012 Bahrain Grand Prix cover, which completes the 2012 Formula 1 season. Wolfgang also updated a few of this season's F1 covers.

Jochen Bangert kindly sent the 2009 Alpentrophy and Silvretta Classic Rallye, 2011 Saar-Lor-Lux, and 2012 Rheinland Classics rally covers, and covers of books on Juan Manuel Fangio, Huschke von Hanstein, Rupert Hollaus, Werner Haas, and Ewald Kluge. And last but not least, thanks to new contributor Glenn Atterton for a number of new and updated motorcycle programme covers from British circuits and hill climbs in the 1970s and '80s.

From the Old to the New (24/11/2017)

Castle Combe, 28/08/1954

Added to the listing of complete programmes is a PDF of the Fifth National Meeting at Castle Combe in 1954; Roy Salvadori, Archie Scott-Brown, and Colin Chapman are among those on the entry list and finished in that order in the Unlimited Sports Cars race. Also added is the programme cover of the final race of the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship taking place this weekend at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, and thanks to Wolfgang Neumayer, last weekend's Macau Grand Prix programme cover.

Covers from Germany (23/11/2017)

Schleizer Dreieck, 10/07/2005

Thanks to Vincent Goffin for the Schleizer Dreieck Sidecar World Championship programme cover, and to Jochen Bangert for the 2005 Sachsen Classic rally cover and three more biography book covers, on Dieter Braun, Georg "Schorsch" Meier, and Helga Heinrich-Steudel.

NASCAR and Sports Car Covers (22/11/2017)

Circuit of the Americas, 12/11/2017

Thanks to Jay Bonvouloir for a few new covers from the United States, including the final race of the 2017 24H Series at Circuit of the Americas.

Motorcycle Covers (21/11/2017)

Speyer Airfield, 17/04/1994

Thanks to Jochen Bangert for another selection of predominantly motorcycle programme covers from France and Germany. Jochen also sent the Barry Sheene und seine Welt and Klassische Deutsche Rennmaschinen book covers, the 1998 Bavaria Historic rally programme cover, the 1992 Isle of Man TT race guide cover (see brochures), the four pre-1997 German motocross covers, and the US Cars exhibition programme cover from the Autobau museum in Switzerland.

Programme and Book Covers (19/11/2017)

Jarama, 08/04/1995

Thanks to John Lehmann for the 2017 Pure Michigan 400 cover, Michael Schmidt for the 2017 F1 Brazilian Grand Prix cover, Paul Clarke for the 1995 4 Hours of Jarama cover, Vincent Goffin for the cover of the 1986 Baden-Württemberg Grand Prix at Hockenheimring and the tenth round of the 1992 Superbike World Championship at Assen, and to Wolfgang Neumayer for the cover of the 2017 Masaryk Racing Days at Brno Circuit. Additionally, Jochen Bangert has sent book covers of biographies on Edgar Barth, Giaco Moagostini, and Hans Georg Anscheidt, Jim Clark, Jo Siffert, and Luigi Taveri, Mike Hailwood, and Phil Read.

Programme Covers from Austria and Germany (18/11/2017)

Tübingen, 21/09/2003

Many thanks to Jochen Bangert who has been busy all week scanning a great number of programme covers from Austrian and German circuits, hillclimbs, and rallies between 2000 and 2009. Jochen also sent all the Austrian and German autocross and motocross covers on display, as well as the pre-2010 Interessengemeinschaft Gespannrennen magazine covers.

A Variety of Programme Covers (17/11/2017)

Brighton Speed Trials, 06/09/1958

Thanks once more to Terry Lynch for another international mix of programme covers. As well as circuit and hill climb/speed trial covers (several of which are new track listings), Terry has also sent a number of motocross covers (there was only one before today) and a rally cover (Rally of Great Britain, 2002).

Japanese Single Seater and Sports Car Covers (16/11/2017)

Mine Circuit, 10/05/1987

Thank you to Daiki Saito for twenty-odd programme covers from Japan, and one from China (the 2017 6 Hours of Shanghai). With his latest contribution Daiki has filled gaps in the World Endurance Championship, Japanese Formula Racing, and Japanese Sportscar Racing categories, including completion of the 2017 Japanese Super Formula Championship and 2017 Super GT Series.

NASCAR and DIRTcar Covers (15/11/2017)

Sonoma Raceway, 08/06/1969

Thanks to John Lehmann for Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar covers from Lebanon Valley Speedway and Weedsport Speedway; a NASCAR Grand National West cover from new track listing Jantzen Beach Arena; Pacific Coast Late Model Division covers from Portland Speedway, Saugus Speedway, and Sears Point (now Sonoma Raceway); and NASCAR Winston West Series covers from Portland and South Bay Park Speedway (or Speedway 117).

European Covers and Ephemera (14/11/2017)

Falkenbergs Motorbana, 17/09/2017

Between them, Jochen Bangert and Vincent Goffin have filled the gaps in the new IGG Magazines page, and Jochen has sent more Austrian rally covers, from 2010 and 2012, and car show and track programme covers from the same period. The Classic Falkenbergs Motorbana covers are courtesy of William Hardie, while the 1954 Eifelrennen Nürburgring cover comes thanks to Vincent.

New Covers and Track Listings (13/11/2017)

Lakeland International Raceway, 29/07/1973

Terry Lynch has kindly sent another varied batch of programme cover scans, featuring single seater and sports car races from new track listings Lakeland International Raceway and St. Johns Airpark.

Ephemera and Programme Covers from Germany (12/11/2017)

Odenwaldring, 09/06/2013

Thanks to Jochen Bangert for a dozen or so mostly classic/revival German motorcycle programme covers. Jochen also sent a number of additions from recent car and bike events in Austria and Germany to the Museums, Car Shows, and Rallies sections, and a new one, in the shape of IGG Magazines, to complement the ISRA covers provided by Vincent Goffin some months ago.

FIA GT1 and Supercars Covers (11/11/2017)

Algarve International Circuit, 08/07/2012

Thanks to Paul Clarke for FIA GT1 Championship programme covers from Algarve International Circuit and Potrero de los Funes Circuit, and to Warrick Ford for covers of the most recent Supercars Championship rounds at Pukekohe Park Raceway and Surfers Paradise International Raceway, which brings us up to date and awaiting the final round of the season at new track Newcastle Street Circuit.

Additions and Updates (10/11/2017)

New Hampshire Motor Speedway, 21/07/2002

NASCAR programme covers from New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Trois-Rivières are amongst today's additions, coming thanks to John Lehmann. John has also kindly provided twenty-odd updated covers from races including the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen International. Most of these programmes are available to buy from John's eBay store.

Brands Hatch and Snetterton Covers (09/11/2017)

Brands Hatch Circuit, 07/06/1987

Thanks to Andrew Horrox for five more programme covers from Brands Hatch Circuit and Snetterton Circuit. Thanks also to Ashley Barnard for the Ferrari: Race to Immortality DVD cover, and the book cover of A Chequered Life, telling the story of Graham Warner.

Motorcycle Programme Covers (08/11/2017)

Chimay Street Circuit, 23/07/2017

Thanks to Jochen Bangert for a large number of mostly classic/revival motorcycle programme covers from Europe. Jochen has also been very helpful by advising on the correct names of some German track listings — hopefully they are more right than wrong now! Thanks as well to Wolfgang Neumayer for the cover of the final ADAC GT Masters of the 2017 season, at Hockenheimring. The Open Trophy is one of two annual races held on the streets of Chimay, the other being Classic Bikes… Grand Prix racing is a thing of the past.

Twenty-Odd Programme Covers (07/11/2017)

Linas-Montlhéry, 07/04/1957

Covers from sports car races form the bulk of Terry Lynch's latest contribution. There are a number of new track listings, and kart covers from Fishermen's Bend Airfield and Place Guillaume. The 1957 Coupes de Vitesse at Linas-Montlhéry might have been Alfonso de Portago's final win before being killed a month later alongside his co-driver, Edmund Nelson, and nine spectators in a crash at what would ultimately be the last Mille Miglia.

A Trio of Spa 24 Hours Covers (06/11/2017)

Spa-Francorchamps, 26/07/1981

Thanks to Erik Nassen for programme covers of the 1980, 1981, and 1984 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. The Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) prepared Mazda RX-7 of Pierre Dieudonné and Tom Walkinshaw himself won the 1981 Spa 24 Hours. It was the first time a Japanese manufacturer had been victorious at the Spa 24 Hours, and the first of two wins at the race for TWR, the other coming in 1984.

A Book, Modified, and GT Covers (05/11/2017)

Orange County Fair Speedway (NY), 22/10/2017

Thanks to Paul Clarke for sending cover scans of two hard to find GT programmes from Navarra and Potrero de los Funes Circuit; only the Monza round of the 2008 FIA GT Championship is now missing. John Lehmann sent an Eastern States 200 cover earlier in the week, and today sent the 56th and most recent running, at Orange County Fair Speedway (NY), a race won by Brett Hearn for the twelfth time and his 175th Modified victory. Thanks also to Ashley Barnard for sending the book cover of My Greatest Race — the greatest race of twenty legendary drivers, retold in their words.

As a follow-up to the above, Paul writes: "I'm not sure that a programme was printed for the 2008 Monza FIA GT race. As you can imagine, I've researched this comprehensively and drawn a blank. There appears to be a few other FIA GT races with no programme, notably 1999 Oschersleben, 2004 Monza and 2009 Hungaroring".

Programme Covers from Around the World (04/11/2017)

Brooklands, 06/05/1939

Thanks to Terry Lynch for an eclectic mix of covers from the Americas, Australia, China, and United Kingdom, including the Junior Car Club's 1939 International Trophy Race at Brooklands. Terry also sent new kart covers from Batavia, Beulah, and Crail, and rally covers from Coventry, 1987, and Targa Florio, 1999, while John Lehmann sent an updated San Gabriel Valley Speedway cover. NB: there is a separate page for the classic Targa Florio sports car race.

Covers from Belgium (03/11/2017)

Zolder, 13/05/1979

Erik Nassen has kindly sent a number of historic and very recent programme covers from Belgium, including the first Grand Prix of Brussels held at the Heysel circuit (in 1960), the 1976 Spa 24 Hours, and the 1979 Belgian Grand Prix — the first of three races won by Jody Scheckter on his way to the F1 world title. There was already a "cover" in place for the Belgian Grand Prix, but it seems as though it is actually the poster. Given the above, the cover is filed under Additions rather than Updates, and in effect we are still two covers short (Buenos Aires and Monaco) of completing the 1979 Formula 1 season.

Programme and Book Covers (02/11/2017)

Nürburgring, 10/07/1955

Thanks to John Lehmann for sending the cover of the 1990 Eastern States 200 at Orange County Fair Speedway (NY), and Vincent Goffin for the rather rare 1955 Um das Bayerkreuz at the Nürburgring Südschleife. The first five Um das Bayerkreuz were held at Leverkusen before moving to the Südschleife in 1953; the 1954 edition was cancelled, and so too the 1956 running, leaving the race in 1955 as the seventh and final Um das Bayerkreuz.

Rob Semmeling's Rennen! Races! Vitesse! website is an invaluable resource for researching races. Rob has contributed many covers over the years and in 2010 wrote, along with Burkhard Köhr, The Other Green Hell, a book covering the history of the Südschleife. In an oversight, it was missing from the book covers page until today.

Enzo Ferrari Comic (01/11/2017)

Enzo Ferrari

On the 50th anniversary of Ferrari's first race, F1 Racing magazine published a comic book celebrating the life of Enzo Ferrari, Il Commendatore. The comic follows Enzo's life and times, from birth to legend. After being misplaced for some time, it's online again in its entirety.

Words by Dominique Pascal; illustrations by Patrick Lesueur; translated from the original French text by Desmond Tumulty.

Back to British (01/11/2017)

Donington Park, 21/05/1989

All the way from New Zealand, Andrew Horrox has sent in some more British programme covers, from Donington Park and Oulton Park Circuit. The 1989 MG Raceday at Donington featured the third round of the BRDC C2 Championship, won by Tim Harvey; Harvey dominated the championship, winning every race in his Spice Ford. Metros and a Maestro on the cover, but alas no Montego…
